In Alan Greenspan's book, The Age of Turbulence , one of the issues he explores is the failure of economic populism in Latin America. Here are his thoughts: " The dictionary defines 'populism' as a political philosophy that supports the rights and power of the people, usually in opposition to a privileged elite. I see economic populism as a response by an impoverished populace to a failing society, one characterized by an economic elite who are perceived as oppressors. Under economic populism, the government accedes to the demands of the people, with little regard for either individual rights or the economic realities of how the wealth of a nation is increased or even sustained." So in Greenspan's view as a self-described Libertarian Republican, economic populism comes to life in "failing societies" that have significant income inequality and are dominated by an economic elite. FULL DISCLOSURE: I am merely a voter and in no way a constitutional scholar. I write these observations as an observer, a citizen and a voter (who also follows AP Style.)  We've seen this year that SCOTUS can act swiftly to allow Trump unchecked powers. They've used the shadow docket to give the president the power to halt payments that have been funded by acts of Congress (Trump constitutionally does not have power of the purse, but that seems unimportant to SCOTUS.)  Another unsigned SCOTUS shadow docket ruling – Noem v. Brett Kavanaugh included a brief concurrence outlining why he thinks it's okay for ICE to consider race and skin color as evidence of a crime , which ignores the 4th amendment, designed to protect people from unreasonable searches and seizures. Here is the language of the 4th amendment:   " The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers...

At a rally last night in Grand Island, Nebraska, Trump claimed that if Iran should take out Los Angeles and San Diego, that would be a "very small price to pay" for his war on Iran.  Here is the quote, as reported by a New York Times reporter at the event in Grand Island, Nebraska:                                    Bluesky post from NY Times reporter Bayliss Wagner on Trump's statement “They could take out a city,” he said. “Let them take—Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego. That’s—this is a very small price to pay." This is a deranged, dangerous statement but if you look at the front page of today's New York Times, there is no hint of it anywhere.                                                   Top ...
