What is Rupert Murdoch's end game?

2025 started off with a horrific domestic terrorism incident in New Orleans – a US Army veteran from Texas plowed an Ford F150 into a crowd of New Year's Eve revelers who were celebrating at New Orleans' historic Bourbon Street, killing 14 people and injuring many more.

After the New Orleans explosion, the president-elect went on record claiming that the incident was the result of Biden's "open borders" policy.

His Truth Social post was retweeted nearly 14,000 times. His lie was widely disseminated. Factually, the US does not have an open border policy; the veteran who killed 14 on New Year's Eve in New Orleans was a Texan, not a migrant - but facts don't seem to matter to the president-elect.

Fox News spent much of New Year's Day ranting about the horrors of living in America today. According to Gustavo Arellano, a columnist at the LA Times, Fox News used the New Orleans attack as an opportunity to attack the FBI, DEI, the FBI's decision to investigate 1/6/21 insurrectionists, etc. From Arrellano's column:

"The Fox News I remembered was in full force: Frothing. Paranoid. Vengeful. Seeking not to inform viewers but to inflame."

We live today with a right-wing media ecosystem that Republicans use to disseminate hate-filled disinformation about America, its institutions and its rule of law. For years, I have asked myself that Rupert Murdoch's end-goal is. When I ask this question on social media, I inevitably get people responding that all Murdoch wants is money. Maybe. But there are a lot of ways to make billions of dollars, and Murdoch has decided to become rich by attacking democracy and the rule of law. What is his ultimate end-game with this approach to disseminating disinformation at the scale and ferocity we find with Fox News? It would seem that his goal is to destroy democracy in America. Murdoch's work to provide the platform for Republicans to attack our nation has been hugely profitable for him. What a way to make billions of bucks.
